About me / Bio:
Pío Baroja was born on December 28, 1872 in San Sebastián, Spain. He was the son of a wine merchant and a pianist. He had a happy childhood and developed an interest in painting and poetry. He moved to Madrid in 1917 with his family and studied art at the San Fernando Academy. He also published his first poems in magazines and won a prize for his painting La primavera (Spring). He became friends with other young poets, such as Federico García Lorca, Luis Cernuda and Vicente Aleixandre, who formed part of the Generation of '98, a group of avant-garde writers who were influenced by modernism and surrealism. He published his first book of poetry, Marinero en tierra (Sailor on Land), in 1925 and won the National Literature Prize. He followed it with other acclaimed collections, such as La amante (The Lover), El alba del alhelí (The Dawn of the Wallflower) and Sobre los ángeles (Concerning the Angels), which showed his mastery of different styles and themes. He also wrote plays, such as Fermín Galán (Fermín Galán) and El hombre deshabitado (The Uninhabited Man), which reflected his social and political concerns. He married none and had no children. He was an active supporter of the Second Spanish Republic and joined the Communist Party of Spain in 1931. He held various cultural and diplomatic posts during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and collaborated with other artists and intellectuals in the defense of democracy against fascism. He went into exile in 1939 after Franco's victory and lived in various countries, such as France, Argentina, Italy and Cuba. He continued writing novels and trilogies, such as La Tierra Vasca (The Basque Country), La lucha por la vida (The Struggle for Life), Memorias de un hombre de acción (Memories of a Man of Action), El árbol de la ciencia (The Tree of Knowledge), which offer a vivid depiction of life in Spain's regions, slums and history. He also wrote biographies of Juan Van Halen, a Spanish military adventurer, and Miguel de Unamuno, a Spanish philosopher and writer. He also painted and drew extensively during his exile. He received several awards and honors for his literary work, such as the Lenin Peace Prize in 1953 and the Cervantes Prize in 1983. He returned to Spain in 1977 after Franco's death and the restoration of democracy. He was welcomed by thousands of people who admired his novels and his commitment to freedom. He died on October 30, 1956 in Madrid at the age of 83 . He is regarded as one of the most important and influential novelists of Spanish literature in the 20th century. He is also remembered as a brilliant writer and orator who left a rich legacy of books, speeches and articles .
