About me / Bio:
Francesc Pi i Margall was a Spanish politician, writer, and philosopher who played a prominent role in the republican and federalist movements of the 19th century. He was born in Barcelona on 29 April 1824 to a working-class family. He received a classical education at a religious school and later studied law at the University of Barcelona. He moved to Madrid in 1847 and began his career as a journalist, theater critic, and historian. He also worked for a Catalan bank and translated several works of French literature and philosophy. Pi was an admirer of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, the founder of mutualist anarchism, whose ideas influenced his political thought and practice. He advocated for a decentralized federation of autonomous regions, based on the principles of liberty, equality, and solidarity. He opposed both the monarchy and the centralism of the Spanish state, as well as the exploitation of the working class by the bourgeoisie. He was also a supporter of Iberian federalism, which aimed to unite Spain and Portugal in a confederation. Pi was involved in several revolutionary movements that challenged the conservative regimes of Isabel II and Amadeo I. He was elected to the Cortes (parliament) several times as a representative of various republican parties. He became the leader of the Federal Democratic Republican Party in 1868 and the Democratic Party in 1870. He was one of the main promoters of the First Spanish Republic, which was proclaimed in 1873 after the abdication of Amadeo I. He served as president of the republic for a brief period from 11 June to 18 July 1873, during which he faced multiple crises, such as the Carlist War, the Third Carlist War, and the cantonalist revolt. The latter was an uprising of several cities and regions that declared themselves independent cantons, following Pi's federalist program. However, Pi was unable to control or negotiate with the rebels, who were often influenced by more radical forms of anarchism. He resigned after failing to form a stable government and was succeeded by Nicolás Salmerón. After the fall of the republic in 1874, Pi continued his political activity as an opposition leader and a defender of democracy and federalism. He also wrote extensively on various topics, such as history, art, economics, sociology, law, and religion. He published several books and articles, such as La reacción y la revolución (1854), Las nacionalidades (1877), Estudios sobre la Edad Media (1883), La federación (1880), Joyas literarias (1894), and Historia general de América (1896). He died in Madrid on 29 November 1901 from pneumonia. He was buried at the Civil Cemetery of Madrid.
