About me / Bio:
Mitch Cronin was a promising and popular Australian rugby league player who played as a hooker for the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the Queensland Cup and the Canberra Raiders in the National Rugby League. He was born on 24 November 1992 in Brisbane and attended St Laurence's College, where he played rugby league and cricket. He started his rugby league career with Souths Logan Magpies in 2011 and then joined the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in 2015. He became the captain of the Seagulls in 2018 and led them to two Queensland Cup titles in 2015 and 2019. He played 105 games for the Seagulls and scored 28 tries. Cronin also had stints with the Canberra Raiders and the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL. He made his NRL debut for the Raiders in 2014 and played four games for them until 2015. He then signed with the Broncos in 2016 but did not play any NRL games for them. He was released by the Broncos at the end of 2017 and returned to the Seagulls. Cronin was regarded as a talented and versatile player who could also play as a halfback or a lock. He was known for his leadership, work ethic, toughness and skill. He was well-liked and respected by his teammates, coaches, fans and opponents. He had aspirations of playing in the NRL again and was considered a potential candidate for the Queensland Maroons State of Origin team. Cronin died on 17 April 2020 at the age of 27 at his parents' home in Brisbane. He was found face-down in a backyard pool after doing a weights session. The exact cause of his death was not confirmed by the coroner, but it was suspected that he may have suffered a heart attack or an accidental overdose of prescription drugs¹. His death shocked and saddened the rugby league community and sparked an outpouring of tributes from various people and organisations. His funeral was held on 24 April 2020 at Wynnum Manly Leagues Club, where hundreds of people attended to pay their respects.
