Janet Seidel

Janet Seidel was an Australian jazz singer and pianist who was known for her smooth and elegant style. She started her musical career as a high school music teacher in Sydney, where she formed a trio with her brother David on bass and Chuck Morgan on guitar. She released her debut album Little Jazz Bird in 1992, which was followed by several more albums that showcased her versatility and range. She sang in various languages, including French, Portuguese, Japanese and Swedish. She also performed songs from the Great American Songbook, as well as original compositions and tributes to artists like Doris Day and Blossom Dearie. She toured extensively in Australia and overseas, appearing at jazz festivals and clubs in Japan, China, Europe and the US. She received critical acclaim and awards for her work, such as the MO Award for Jazz Vocalist of the Year in 2003 and 2006. She was also nominated for the ARIA Music Award for Best Jazz Album four times. She died of ovarian cancer on 7 August 2017 at the age of 62.
