About me / Bio:
Peter Harvey was a versatile and respected Australian journalist and broadcaster who worked for the Nine Network for 38 years. He was born on 16 September 1944 in Bellevue Hill near Bondi in Sydney. He began his career in journalism with the newspaper The Daily Telegraph and won a Walkley Award in 1964. He then moved to radio journalism and worked at stations 2UE and 2GB before moving to London and working for BBC Radio. He also worked for The Guardian, where he received the British Reporter of the Year Award for a series of articles about the sale of confidential information, and Newsweek magazine as a reporter in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. In 1973, he joined the Nine Network and became its news director and reporter in Canberra for many years. He covered many major political stories, such as the dismissal of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam in 1975. His deep baritone voice and signature sign-off of "Peter Harvey, Canberra" became iconic and were often imitated by comedians. He also reported from many international locations, such as Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War in 1990³. He later transferred to Sydney and contributed to programs such as Today and 60 Minutes, where he presented a weekly viewers' feedback segment³. Harvey was married to Anne and had two children, Claire and Adam, who both followed his footsteps into journalism careers. Claire is the deputy editor of The Sunday Telegraph newspaper and Adam is a reporter for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Sydney. Harvey was also a devout Christian who believed strongly in God and Jesus Christ. Harvey was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in August 2012 while holidaying in Venice with his wife. He announced his illness publicly in October 2012 and continued to work until February 2013. He died on 2 March 2013 at North Shore Private Hospital in Sydney at the age of 68 . He was posthumously inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame on 27 April 2014. He was remembered as a professional and passionate journalist who had a distinctive voice and style.
