About me / Bio:
Bert Newton was an Australian media personality who was a Logie Hall of Fame inductee, quadruple Gold Logie award-winning entertainer, and radio, theatre, and television personality and presenter. He was known for his collaborations opposite Graham Kennedy and Don Lane on their respective variety shows, and appearances with his wife, singer Patti Newton. He was also known for his distinctive round face, broad toothy grin and immaculately groomed hair. Newton started his career in radio broadcasting at the age of 15, working as a junior announcer on 3XY Melbourne. He later moved to television in 1957, hosting The Late Show on HSV-7. He became a star and fixture of Australian television since its inception in 1956, and was considered both an industry pioneer icon and one of the longest-serving television performers in the world. He worked for both the Nine Network and Ten Network on numerous variety shows, including In Melbourne Tonight, New Faces, Good Morning Australia, 20 to 1, and game show Bert's Family Feud. He also hosted the Logie Awards 19 times, more than anyone else, and was known for his witty and spontaneous ad libs. Newton also had a successful career on stage, playing roles in musicals such as Wicked, Annie, Grease, and The Rocky Horror Show. He was nominated for four Helpmann Awards for his performances. He also appeared in several films, such as The Wannabes, The Club, and Fatty Finn. Newton married Patti McGrath in 1974 after proposing to her on board the Queen Elizabeth II. They had two children, Matthew and Lauren, who both followed their parents into the entertainment industry. Matthew became an actor and director, while Lauren became a TV personality and married former Olympic swimmer Matt Welsh. Newton had six grandchildren from Lauren's marriage. Newton had several health issues throughout his life, including quadruple bypass surgery in 2012, a nasty bout of pneumonia in 2017, and multiple hospitalisations. In May 2021, he had his leg amputated due to a life-threatening infection. He died on October 30, 2021 at the age of 83 while undergoing palliative care at a private clinic in Melbourne. Newton was widely regarded as one of Australia's most beloved and respected entertainers. He received many accolades for his work, including four Gold Logies, two Hall of Fame Logies, an Order of Australia medal, an Order of the British Empire medal, a TV Week Lifetime Achievement Award, and a plaque on Melbourne's Walk of Stars. He was also honoured with a state funeral at St Patrick's Cathedral on November 12, 2021. Newton's slogan was I like the boy, which he famously said to Muhammad Ali during the 1979 Logie Awards. The phrase became a catchphrase for Newton and was often used by his fans and colleagues.
