Bernardino Pinera Carvallo

Bernardino Piñera Carvallo was a Chilean bishop of the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in Paris, France, where his father was working as a diplomat. He studied medicine at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and specialized in Cleveland, Ohio. He was ordained as a priest in 1947 and worked for the Catholic Action. He was appointed as auxiliary bishop of Talca in 1958 by Pope Pius XII. He later became the bishop of Temuco in 1960 and the archbishop of La Serena in 1983. He attended the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965. He was the president of the Episcopal Conference of Chile from 1983 to 1988. He retired in 1990 and became the archbishop emeritus of La Serena. He was the paternal uncle of Sebastián Piñera, the president of Chile. In 2019, he was investigated by the Vatican for alleged sexual abuse of a minor 50 years earlier. He died in Santiago on June 21, 2020, at the age of 104, from pneumonia due to COVID-19. He was the oldest Catholic bishop in the world and the last surviving bishop appointed by Pius XII.
