About me / Bio:
Ernest Shackleton was one of the most famous polar explorers of the 20th century. He was born in Ireland in 1874 and moved to England with his family when he was ten. He left school at 16 and joined the merchant navy, where he developed a passion for sailing and adventure. He participated in four Antarctic expeditions, three of which he led himself. He is best known for his Endurance expedition of 1914-1916, which aimed to cross the Antarctic continent from coast to coast via the South Pole. However, his ship was trapped and crushed by pack ice in the Weddell Sea, forcing him and his crew to abandon it and camp on the drifting ice floes. After several months of hardship and danger, Shackleton decided to take a small boat with five men and sail 800 miles across the stormy Southern Ocean to reach South Georgia Island, where he could get help from a whaling station. He then made a perilous crossing of the island’s mountainous terrain to reach the station and organize a rescue mission for his men, who were still stranded on Elephant Island. He managed to save all 28 men of his expedition, without losing a single life. This feat of leadership, courage, and endurance is widely regarded as one of the greatest survival stories in history. Shackleton’s other expeditions were also remarkable for their achievements and challenges. He was part of Robert Falcon Scott’s Discovery expedition of 1901-1904, where he set a new record for the farthest south latitude reached by humans. He led the Nimrod expedition of 1907-1909, where he came within 97 miles of the South Pole and his team climbed Mount Erebus, the most active Antarctic volcano. He also led the Quest expedition of 1921-1922, which intended to circumnavigate Antarctica and explore its sub-Antarctic islands. However, he died of a heart attack on board his ship while it was moored in South Georgia Island, at the age of 47. He was buried there at his wife’s request. Shackleton’s legacy lives on as an inspiration for generations of explorers, adventurers, and leaders. He has been honored with numerous awards, monuments, books, films, and museums. His name has been given to several geographic features in Antarctica and elsewhere, as well as to a crater on the Moon and an asteroid. He is widely regarded as one of the principal figures of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, along with Scott, Amundsen, Mawson, and others.
