About me / Bio:
Abu Nasr Muhammad al-Farabi was one of the greatest philosophers and scientists of the medieval Islamic world. He was born in the region of Transoxiana, which was then under the rule of the Samanid dynasty. He received his early education in Farab and Bukhara, where he studied logic, mathematics, music, and other sciences. He then moved to Baghdad, the capital of the Abbasid caliphate, where he became acquainted with the works of Aristotle and Plato, as well as their commentators and translators. He also learned Arabic, Syriac, Persian, and Greek languages. Al-Farabi was a prolific writer who composed many books and treatises on various subjects, such as metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, psychology, cosmology, logic, and music theory. He was the first Muslim philosopher who presented philosophy as a coherent and systematic discipline that could address the questions and challenges of his time. He also developed his own original philosophical system that combined elements of Aristotelianism and Neoplatonism with Islamic theology and mysticism. He was especially interested in the nature and role of reason in human life and society. He argued that reason is the highest faculty of the human soul and the source of all knowledge and virtue. He also maintained that reason can lead to the knowledge of God and the attainment of happiness. Al-Farabi was also a skilled musician who played the oud (a type of lute) and invented several musical instruments. He wrote a famous book on music theory called Kitab al-Musiqi al-Kabir (The Great Book of Music), in which he discussed the principles and methods of music composition, performance, and criticism. He also analyzed the effects of music on the human soul and its relation to ethics and politics. He believed that music can influence the emotions and character of the listeners and can help them achieve harmony and balance in their lives. Al-Farabi traveled widely in his later years and visited many places such as Damascus, Aleppo, Cairo, Harran, and Ascalon. He became associated with the court of Sayf al-Dawla, the Hamdanid ruler of Syria, who became his patron and admirer. He died around 950 CE in Damascus or on his way to Ascalon. He was buried in the Bab al-Saghir cemetery in Damascus, where his tomb is still visited by many people. Al-Farabi had a profound impact on the intellectual history of both the Islamic and Western worlds. He was regarded by his Muslim contemporaries and successors as the greatest philosophical authority after Aristotle. He was known as al-Muallim al-Thani (The Second Master) or al-Farabi al-Awwal (The First Farabi). His works were translated into Latin, Hebrew, Turkish, Persian, and other languages. He influenced many prominent philosophers and thinkers such as Avicenna, Averroes, Maimonides, Albertus Magnus, Thomas Aquinas, Dante Alighieri, and Leo Strauss.
