Nicolaus Olahus, known as Nicolae Valahul in Romanian, was a prominent figure of the 16th century, serving as the Archbishop of Esztergom and Primate of Hungary. His contributions to the Hungarian culture and the Catholic Church were significant, and his works as a humanist and historiographer left a lasting impact. Olahus was born on January 10, 1493, in Sibiu, which was part of the Kingdom of Hungary at the time. He was of Romanian descent on his father's side and Hungarian on his mother's. His education and early career were marked by his ecclesiastical pursuits, leading to various high-ranking positions within the church. He was appointed Archbishop of Esztergom in 1553 and held the position until his death on January 15, 1568, in Pozsony. Throughout his life, Olahus was a dedicated scholar and a patron of the arts and education.
