About me / Bio:
Cuauhtémoc was the 11th and last Aztec emperor, who ruled from 1520 to 1521. He was the nephew and son-in-law of Montezuma II, the previous emperor who was killed by the Spanish. Cuauhtémoc inherited a devastated empire that was under siege by the Spanish and their indigenous allies. He tried to organize a defense and called for reinforcements from other cities, but he faced betrayal and desertion from many of his subjects. He also had to deal with a smallpox epidemic that decimated the population. He fought bravely and fiercely, but he was eventually captured by Hernán Cortés, the leader of the Spanish expedition. He was tortured to reveal the location of the Aztec treasure, but he refused to speak. He was initially treated with respect by the Spanish, but later he was accused of plotting a rebellion and hanged by Cortés in Honduras, where he had been taken as a prisoner. Cuauhtémoc is remembered as a hero and a martyr by the Mexican people, who admire his courage and loyalty to his culture. He is also considered a symbol of national identity and resistance against foreign domination.
