Lucas Alaman

Lucas Alamán was a prominent figure of nineteenth-century Mexico, who advocated for a strong, centralized government that would support industrialization, education, and modernization. He was born in Guanajuato, a mining town, and studied engineering in Europe. He served as a deputy in the Spanish Cortes and developed a admiration for the British political system. He returned to Mexico after its independence and held several ministerial positions under different presidents. He was the leader of the conservative party and opposed the liberal reforms and the US intervention. He was also a prolific historian and writer, who founded the National Museum and the General Archive. He wrote several works on the history of Mexico, especially the independence movement. He died in Mexico City in 1853.
