Senta Teresa Urrea

Senta Teresa Urrea was born in 1873 in Ocoroni, Sinaloa, Mexico, as the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy rancher and a young indigenous servant. She grew up in Cabora, Sonora, where she learned about herbal medicine from an old woman named María Sonora. In 1889, she fell into a coma and had religious visions that gave her healing powers. She became known as Teresita, Santa Teresa, or La Santa de Cábora, and attracted thousands of pilgrims who sought her cures and miracles. She also preached against the oppression and injustice of the Porfirio Díaz regime, and inspired several uprisings among the poor and indigenous people, such as the Tomochic rebellion in 1891. She was exiled by the government in 1892 and moved to Arizona, where she continued her healing and political activities. She also lived in Texas and California, where she met journalists, writers, and activists who spread her fame and influence. She died of tuberculosis in 1906 in Clifton, Arizona, at the age of 32. She was buried there, but her remains were later moved to a cemetery in El Paso, Texas. She is regarded as a folk saint, a revolutionary heroine, and a symbol of hope for the oppressed.
