Eduardo Lizalde

Eduardo Lizalde was a renowned Mexican poet, academic and administrator. He was known as "El Tigre" for recurring themes in his work which stem from his childhood fondness for the stories of Salgari and Kipling. He published his first short poems in 1948, at the age of eighteen, in the magazine El Universal. His first full book of poems, La Mala Hora, was published in 1956. He studied literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he also served as the director of the Casa del Lago. He held several positions at the Secretariat of Public Education and was the director of the José Vasconcelos Library. He co-hosted Contrapunto, a weekday radio program from the Instituto Mexicano de la Radio (IMER). He received several awards and honors, such as the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize, the Premio Nacional de Lingüística y Literatura, the Premio Iberoamericano Ramón López Velarde, the Alfonso Reyes International Prize, and the Carlos Fuentes International Prize for Literary Creation in the Spanish Language. He was also a member of the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua. He died of natural causes in 2022, at the age of 92.
