Lorenz Frolich

Lorenz Frølich was a Danish painter, illustrator, graphic artist and etcher. He was born into a wealthy bourgeois family in Copenhagen and received drawing lessons from prominent artists such as Martinus Rørbye, Christen Købke and Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. He travelled extensively in Europe and lived in Dresden, Rome and Paris, where he became known for his illustrations of children's books. He also illustrated works by Hans Christian Andersen, Adam Oehlenschläger and Adam Fabricius. He painted decorations for public buildings such as the Court of Appeals in Flensburg and the ceiling paintings at Frederiksborg Castle. He was influenced by the German Romantic style and the Nordic mythology. He was appointed professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 1877 and received several honors and awards. He died on his 88th birthday in Hellerup, Denmark.
