Goncalo Velho

Gonçalo Velho was a 15th-century Portuguese navigator and explorer who worked for Prince Henry the Navigator. He was the first person to sail beyond Cape Bojador in 1434, a feat that opened the way for further exploration of the African coast. He also participated in another expedition in 1435, reaching the bay of Angra dos Ruivos. He was a native of Lagos, where he based his sea voyages. Little is known about his personal life or his death. He is considered one of the pioneers of the Portuguese Age of Discovery.
