Niall Toibin

Niall Tóibín was an Irish comedian and actor who had a long and illustrious career spanning over four decades. He was born in Cork into an Irish speaking family and started acting in the 1950s. He appeared in many films and television series, such as Ryan's Daughter, Veronica Guerin, The Irish R.M., Ballykissangel and more. He also played Brendan Behan in the original Abbey Theatre production of Borstal Boy on Broadway. He was awarded honorary lifetime membership of the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) in 2011 and the Freedom of Cork in 2015. He died in Dublin in 2019 after a long illness. He is survived by his five children and seven grandchildren. He was known for his comic genius, his deep understanding and sensitivity to the nuance of Irish life, and his versatile portrayal of a wide variety of characters.
