Anna Ancher

Anna Ancher was a Danish painter who was one of the Skagen Painters, a group of artists who gathered in the village of Skagen in the north of Denmark. She was the only one of the group who was born and raised in Skagen, where her father owned the Brøndums Hotel. She showed an early interest in art and studied drawing in Copenhagen. She also took lessons from some of the other Skagen Painters, especially P.S. Krøyer. She married fellow painter Michael Ancher in 1880 and they had one daughter, Helga, who also became an artist. Anna Ancher was known for her naturalistic and impressionistic paintings of the everyday life and light of Skagen. She experimented with perspective, colour and composition and was considered one of the most modern and innovative painters of her time. She exhibited widely in Denmark and abroad and won several awards and honours. She died in Skagen in 1935 at the age of 75.
