Damiao Gois

Damião de Góis was a prominent Portuguese humanist and historian who lived in the 16th century. He was a friend and student of Erasmus and travelled extensively throughout Europe, meeting many influential figures of the Renaissance. He wrote several works on the history of Portugal, the discoveries, the Ethiopian embassy, and the life of King Manuel I. He also translated classical texts into Portuguese and composed some musical pieces. He was accused of heresy by the Inquisition and spent his last years in his hometown of Alenquer, where he died in 1574.
