Nicholas Roerich

Nicholas Roerich was a Russian painter, writer, archaeologist, theosophist, and activist for the cause of preserving art and architecture during times of war. He was influenced by Symbolism, Theosophy, and eastern religions. He painted portraits, landscapes, and scenes of ancient Russia and India. He designed sets and costumes for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. He was a pioneer of the Roerich Pact, an international treaty for the protection of cultural heritage. He also founded the Agni Yoga Society, a spiritual movement based on his teachings. He traveled extensively in Asia, especially in the Himalayas, where he studied Tibetan culture and Buddhism. He lived in India until his death in 1947.
