About me / Bio:
Semyon Andreevich Pugachov, also known as Emelyan Pugachev, was a Russian Cossack who led a massive peasant uprising against the rule of Catherine II in 1773-1775. He claimed to be Peter III, the deposed husband of Catherine, who was allegedly killed in 1762. He gathered a large army of Cossacks, peasants, serfs, and ethnic minorities, and waged a guerrilla war against the imperial forces in the Volga region, the Urals, and Siberia. He captured several towns and fortresses, and proclaimed himself the true tsar of Russia. He issued decrees abolishing serfdom, taxes, and military conscription, and granting land and freedom to his followers. He also tried to establish diplomatic relations with foreign powers, such as Turkey and Prussia. However, his rebellion was eventually crushed by the superior forces of Catherine, who sent several generals and armies to suppress the revolt. Pugachov was betrayed by some of his allies and captured in 1774. He was brought to Moscow, where he was publicly tortured and executed by quartering. His severed head was preserved in a jar and displayed in the Kunstkamera museum. His rebellion was the largest and most dangerous peasant revolt in Russian history, and had a lasting impact on the social and political situation in the country. He became a popular folk hero and a symbol of resistance against oppression and injustice.
