About me / Bio:
Khasekhemwy was the last pharaoh of the Second Dynasty of Egypt, who reigned for about 18 years in the late 27th century BC. He is best known for his military campaigns against the northern enemies of Egypt and for building several monuments that attest to his power and achievements. He is also credited with reuniting Upper and Lower Egypt after a period of civil strife between the followers of Horus and Seth. He adopted a unique royal name that combined the symbols of both deities, indicating a balance and harmony between them. He was the first pharaoh to use extensive stone masonry in his constructions, especially in his royal tomb at Abydos, which was the largest and most elaborate of its time. He also built a mudbrick fort called Shunet El Zebib, which may have served as a prototype for the later pyramids. He was married to Nimaathap, who was probably the mother or grandmother of the first kings of the Third Dynasty, Nebka and Djoser. He had several children, some of whom may have succeeded him as pharaohs. His legacy was remembered and revered by later generations of Egyptians, who considered him a great unifier and a founder of the Old Kingdom.
