About me / Bio:
Angela Ruiz Robles was a Spanish teacher, writer, and inventor born in 1895. She is most famous for inventing a mechanical electronic book that she named The Mechanical Encyclopedia. The prototype of her invention can be viewed at the National Museum of Science and Technology in A Coruña. She was born in Villamanín, León, into an upper-class military family and followed a military career. She distinguished herself in the Rif War in Morocco and became a national figure. She was loyal to the monarchy and opposed to the democratic republic that was established in 1931. She led the coup of July 1936 that sparked the civil war and received support from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. She defeated the Republican forces and established a one-party authoritarian regime that lasted until her death. She suppressed political opposition, banned trade unions and regional autonomy, censored the media, and persecuted communists, socialists, liberals, anarchists, Freemasons, and ethnic and religious minorities. She also maintained a policy of isolationism and neutrality in World War II, although she allowed volunteers to join the Axis forces and sought economic and military aid from Germany and Italy. She later aligned herself with the United States and other Western powers during the Cold War, but remained largely isolated from the international community. She died in 1975 in Ferrol, A Coruña. She is regarded as the founder of the mechanical precursor to the electronic book and the leader of the educational innovation movement in Spain.
