Fifi Young

Fifi Young was a Canadian-born Indonesian actress who started her career as a dancer in the Dewi Dja' troupe. She later joined the Miss Riboet's Orion troupe, where she met and married the playwright Njoo Cheong Seng. He coached her in acting and gave her the stage name Fifi Young, inspired by the French actress Fifi D'Orsay. Young and Njoo established their own troupe, Fifi Young's Pagoda, in 1937. They also entered the film industry, working with Oriental Film and Majestic Pictures. Young starred in several films before and during the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, such as Kris Mataram, Zoebaida, and Air Mata Iboe. After the war, she continued to act in films, mostly in supporting roles as mothers or grandmothers. She appeared in films such as Tiga Dara, Si Pitung, and Incontro d'amore. She was one of the most prolific actresses in Indonesian cinema, acting in at least 86 films over her 34-year career. She died in Jakarta on 5 March 1975 at the age of 60.
