Soekarno Noer

Soekarno M. Noer was an Indonesian actor and film producer who starred in more than 100 films and dramas. He was born in Batavia, Dutch East Indies (now Jakarta) on 13 September 1931 to a Minangkabau family from Bonjol, West Sumatra. His father was a journalist for Pemandangan newspaper. He started his career in theater in 1953 with the play Runtuhan. He made his film debut in 1954 with Sri Asih. He was nominated for four Citra Awards at the Indonesian Film Festival and won three of them, as best actor for his roles in Anakku Sajang (1960), Dibalik Tjahaja Gemerlapan (1967), and Kemelut Hidup (1979). He also produced one film, Honey Money and Djakarta Fair, under his own company PT Kartika Binaprama in 1970. He was elected as the chairman of the Association of Indonesian Film Artists (Parfi) in 1974. He married Lily Istiarti Sukarno and had six children, three of whom followed his footsteps as actors: Tino Karno, Rano Karno, and Suti Karno. He and his children also founded Karno's Film, which launched the popular TV series Si Doel Anak Sekolahan. He died of a heart attack in Surabaya on 26 July 1986 and was buried at Jalan Raya Darmo. He was survived by his wife and children. He was also the brother of actor Ismed M. Noor.
