About me / Bio:
Masa Saito was a Japanese professional wrestler who competed in various promotions around the world for 33 years. He began his career as an amateur wrestler, representing Japan in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He turned pro in 1965 and quickly established himself as a feared competitor in both Japan and the United States. He was nicknamed "Mr. Torture" for his punishing and sadistic style. He held numerous titles in the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), including the Florida Heavyweight Championship and the Florida Tag Team Championship. He joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1981, where he teamed with Mr. Fuji to win the World Tag Team Championship twice. He also wrestled for the American Wrestling Association (AWA), where he defeated Larry Zbyszko to become the AWA World Heavyweight Champion in 1990. In Japan, he wrestled for both All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) and New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), where he won the IWGP Tag Team Championship twice, once with Riki Choshu and once with Shinya Hashimoto. He also had a famous match with Antonio Inoki that lasted over two hours on Ganryujima island in 1987. Saito was involved in a controversial incident in 1984, when he and Ken Patera were arrested for assaulting police officers in Waukesha, Wisconsin, following an accusation of vandalism against a McDonald's restaurant. Saito was sentenced to two years in prison for the incident. He retired from wrestling in 1999 and stayed in NJPW as a commentator until 2003. He then worked with the Fighting World of Japan Pro Wrestling and the Diamond Ring promotion as a supervisor and manager. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2000 and died from complications of the disease in 2018 at the age of 76.
