Osami Nagano

Osami Nagano was a Marshal Admiral of the Imperial Japanese Navy and one of the leaders of Japan's military during most of the Second World War. He was born in Kōchi to an ex-samurai family and graduated from the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy in 1900. He served in various staff and command positions in the navy, including the Minister of the Navy, the Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet, and the Chief of the Naval General Staff. He was the one who planned and ordered the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, which brought the United States into the war. He also oversaw the naval operations in the Pacific War until he was removed from his post in 1944. After the war, he was arrested by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East and charged with war crimes, but he died of natural causes in prison before the trial was completed. He was buried at the Joshin-ji Temple Cemetery in Tokyo. He had four children, two sons and two daughters, with his wife Kyoko Nagano.
