About me / Bio:
Toyotomi Hideyori was born in 1593 as the second son of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the general who first unified Japan after more than a century of civil unrest. His mother, Yodo-dono, was the niece of Oda Nobunaga, another prominent warlord. Hideyori's birth created a potential succession problem, as Hideyoshi had already designated his nephew Hidetsugu as his heir. To avoid conflict, Hideyoshi exiled Hidetsugu to Mount Kōya and then ordered him to commit suicide in 1595, along with his family members. Hideyori became the head of the Toyotomi clan and the nominal ruler of Japan, but he was still a child and had little real power. Hideyoshi appointed five regents to govern in Hideyori's name until he came of age, but they soon began to compete for influence and territory. The most ambitious of them was Tokugawa Ieyasu, who had been Hideyoshi's ally and rival. Ieyasu seized control of Japan in 1600, after his victory over the other regents and their allies at the Battle of Sekigahara. He became the shogun, the supreme military leader, and established the Tokugawa shogunate, which would rule Japan for the next 250 years. Hideyori was allowed to live in Osaka Castle, the stronghold of the Toyotomi clan, but he was closely watched by Ieyasu and his agents. He married Senhime, the seven-year-old granddaughter of Ieyasu, in a political arrangement to secure peace between the two clans. He also sponsored the construction of a temple and a giant statue of Buddha in Kyoto, which was seen as a sign of his piety and generosity. However, Ieyasu still viewed Hideyori as a potential threat, as many samurai who opposed the Tokugawa rule rallied around him, claiming that he was the rightful ruler of Japan. In 1614, Ieyasu attacked Osaka Castle, starting the Siege of Osaka, a series of battles that lasted until 1615. The first attack, known as the Winter Siege, failed, as the defenders of the castle resisted the Tokugawa forces. Hideyori agreed to a truce and dismantled the fortifications of the castle, but he did not surrender. He secretly prepared for another confrontation, gathering more troops and weapons. In 1615, Ieyasu launched the second attack, known as the Summer Siege, which was more successful. He breached the walls of the castle and set it on fire, forcing Hideyori and his mother to retreat to the inner keep. There, they committed seppuku, a ritual suicide, to avoid capture and humiliation. Hideyori was 21 years old. His death marked the end of the Toyotomi clan and the resistance to the Tokugawa shogunate. His loyal followers buried his remains at Mount Kōya, a sacred site of Buddhism. He is remembered as the last scion of the Toyotomi clan, who fought bravely against overwhelming odds.
