About me / Bio:
Koxinga was a Chinese military leader who resisted the Qing conquest of China in the 17th century, fighting them on China's southeastern coast. He was born in Japan to a Chinese father, Zheng Zhilong, a maritime adventurer, and a Japanese mother, Tagawa Matsu. He moved to Fujian province of Ming dynasty China when he was seven years old and adopted the name Zheng Chenggong. He studied at the Imperial University and became a scholar and a general. He inherited his father's fleet and wealth and became a loyal supporter of the Southern Ming dynasty, which was established after the fall of Beijing to the Manchu invaders. He fought against the Qing forces and the Dutch colonists, who occupied parts of China and Taiwan. He is best known for his successful invasion of Taiwan in 1661, where he defeated the Dutch and established the Kingdom of Tungning, the first Han Chinese regime to rule the island. He died of malaria in 1662 and was succeeded by his son Zheng Jing. He is regarded as a national hero in China and Taiwan and a folk deity in some places. He is also known by his honorific title Koxinga, which means "Lord of the Imperial Surname", as he was granted the surname of the Ming emperor. He had other names, such as Prince of Yanping and Prince Wu of Chao. He left a lasting legacy in the history and culture of East Asia and Southeast Asia.
