Zhaozong of Tang

Zhaozong was the seventh son of Emperor Yizong and the younger brother of Emperor Xizong. He ascended the throne in 888, at a time when the Tang dynasty was in decline and facing rebellions from various warlords. He tried to restore imperial authority and reform the government, but his efforts were largely unsuccessful and often backfired. He was controlled by powerful eunuchs and military governors, who often forced him to move his capital and issue edicts that favored their interests. He was also known for his cruelty and extravagance, as he ordered the execution of many officials and aristocrats, and spent lavishly on his palace and harem. In 904, he was assassinated by Zhu Wen, the most powerful warlord at the time, who then placed Zhaozong's young son Li Zhu on the throne as a puppet emperor. Zhaozong was the second-last emperor of the Tang dynasty, which ended in 907 when Zhu Wen usurped the throne and established the Later Liang dynasty. Zhaozong was buried in the He Mausoleum, and posthumously known as Emperor Shengmu Jingwen Xiao or Emperor Gongling Zhuangmin Xiao.
