Wu Jieping was a Chinese medical scientist and politician who made significant contributions to the field of urology and public health in China. He was the founder of the Chinese Urological Society, the former president of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, the Chinese Medical Association, and the Peking Union Medical University. He was also a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the World Academy of Sciences. He was widely recognized as a medical pioneer in China and abroad, and received many awards and honors, including the World Health Organization's gold medal for his anti-smoking campaigns. He was also the personal physician of many Chinese and foreign leaders, such as Zhou Enlai and Sukarno. He was active in the Jiusan Society, a political party of intellectuals in China, and served as its chairman from 1992 to 2002. He was also elected as the vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for two consecutive terms from 1993 to 2003. He was involved in the hand-over ceremonies of Hong Kong and Macao, and was a member of the preparatory committees of both regions. He was also the honorary president of the Chinese People's Association for Peace and Disarmament. He founded the Wu Jieping Medical Foundation in 2000 to support medical research and education in China. He died in Beijing on March 2, 2011, at the age of 94.
