Siem Piet Nio was a prominent Indonesian Chinese writer and feminist who was active in the 1920s and 1930s. She was born to a Peranakan Chinese family in Purbalingga, Central Java, in 1907. She received her education at a missionary school and founded a women's association at the age of fifteen. She moved to Banyumas Regency and started publishing her writings in various magazines, such as Liberty and Panorama. She used the pen name Hong Le Hoa and advocated for women's education, self-emancipation, and social participation. She also became the editor-in-chief of Soeara Persatoean Kaoem Prempoean Tionghoa Indonesia, the first Malay language Chinese feminist magazine in the Dutch East Indies. She married a merchant named Liauw Seng Toh in 1930 and settled in Sukabumi. She reduced her writing activity after having children and retired completely after World War II. She died in Sukabumi in 1986.
