About me / Bio:
Hippocrates was a Greek physician who is widely regarded as the father of medicine. He was born in Kos, an island in the Aegean Sea, around 460 BC. He belonged to the Asclepiad family, a lineage of physicians and priests who claimed descent from the god Asclepius. He learned medicine from his father and grandfather, and also studied with other teachers such as Democritus and Gorgias. He traveled extensively throughout Greece and Asia Minor, practicing and teaching medicine. He founded a medical school in Kos, where he trained many students and followers. He is credited with writing or inspiring a collection of medical treatises known as the Hippocratic Corpus, which covers various topics such as anatomy, physiology, diagnosis, prognosis, surgery, ethics, and epidemics. He is also famous for the Hippocratic Oath, a code of conduct for physicians that is still in use today. He advocated a rational and empirical approach to medicine, based on observation and experience, rather than superstition and dogma. He believed that diseases had natural causes and could be cured by natural means. He also emphasized the importance of diet, hygiene, and environmental factors in health and disease. He introduced the concept of the four humors (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile) and their balance or imbalance in the body. He also classified diseases into acute, chronic, endemic, and epidemic. He is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of medicine and science, and his legacy has inspired generations of physicians and philosophers. He died in Larissa, Thessaly, around 370 BC, at the age of about 90.
