Hyginus

Hyginus was a Greek philosopher who became the bishop of Rome from about 136 to about 140. He is regarded as a saint by the Catholic Church, and his feast day is January 11. He faced the challenges of the Gnostic heresies of Valentinus and Cerdo, who tried to infiltrate the Roman Church with their false doctrines. He excommunicated them after they refused to repent. He also instituted godparents at baptism to assist the baptized during their Christian life. He decreed that all churches be consecrated. He is said to have died a martyr, though no records verify this.
