About me / Bio:
Satyajit Ray was a renowned Indian filmmaker who is widely regarded as one of the greatest directors of world cinema. He was also a prolific writer, composer, illustrator, and editor who contributed to various fields of Bengali literature and culture. He created some of the most memorable characters in Indian fiction, such as Feluda the detective, Professor Shonku the scientist, and Goopy and Bagha the musicians. He was also a master of adapting literary works into films, such as those of Rabindranath Tagore, Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, and Munshi Premchand. Ray was born into a distinguished family of artists and intellectuals in Calcutta. His grandfather Upendrakishore Ray was a writer, painter, and musician. His father Sukumar Ray was a poet, illustrator, and publisher. His mother Suprabha Ray was a homemaker who encouraged his artistic talents. Ray studied economics at Presidency College and fine arts at Visva-Bharati University. He started his career as a commercial artist and graphic designer at a British-run advertising agency. Ray's interest in filmmaking was sparked by his exposure to European cinema during his visit to London in 1950. He was particularly influenced by the Italian neorealist film Bicycle Thieves (1948) by Vittorio De Sica. He decided to make his own film based on a novel by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay called Pather Panchali (The Song of the Road). The film took several years to complete due to financial and technical difficulties. It was finally released in 1955 and won critical acclaim and international recognition. It was the first part of the Apu Trilogy, which also included Aparajito (The Unvanquished) (1956) and Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) (1959). The trilogy is considered to be one of the masterpieces of world cinema. Ray went on to make more than 30 feature films and several documentaries and short films in his career. He explored various genres and themes, such as social realism, humanism, comedy, fantasy, history, politics, and music. Some of his most acclaimed films are Jalsaghar (The Music Room) (1958), Charulata (The Lonely Wife) (1964), Nayak (The Hero) (1966), Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (The Adventures of Goopy and Bagha) (1968), Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest) (1970), Shatranj Ke Khilari (The Chess Players) (1977), Ghare Baire (The Home and the World) (1984), and Agantuk (The Stranger) (1991). Ray was also a prolific writer who wrote novels, short stories, essays, memoirs, and criticism. He wrote mainly for children and young adults, but his works appealed to readers of all ages. He created some of the most popular characters in Bengali fiction, such as Feluda the detective, who appeared in 35 stories and two films; Professor Shonku the scientist, who appeared in 40 stories; Tarini Khuro the storyteller, who appeared in 21 stories; and Lalmohan Ganguly the novelist, who appeared in 16 stories. He also wrote screenplays for his own films and for other directors. He edited two magazines for children: Sandesh and Anandamela. Ray was also a talented composer and musician who composed the music for most of his films and for some of his stories. He was influenced by both Indian classical and folk music and Western classical and popular music. He played various instruments, such as the piano, the sitar, the esraj, and the flute. He also wrote lyrics for some of his songs. Ray received numerous awards and honors for his achievements in cinema, literature, and music. He won 32 National Film Awards, the most by any Indian filmmaker. He also won several international awards, such as the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival, and the Honorary Academy Award. He was also awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in 1992. He was also honored by various foreign governments and institutions, such as the Legion of Honor by France, the Order of Arts and Letters by France, the Order of the Smile by Poland, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award by India, and honorary doctorates by Oxford University, Delhi University, and Visva-Bharati University. Ray died on April 23, 1992, in Calcutta at the age of 70. He was cremated at the Keoratala crematorium in Kolkata. His ashes were immersed in the Ganges river. He is survived by his wife Bijoya Ray and his son Sandip Ray, who is also a filmmaker. Ray's legacy lives on through his films, books, and music, which continue to inspire and entertain generations of audiences around the world.
