Vittorio Gassmann

Slogan
Acting is not that far from mental disease: An actor works on splitting his character into others.
About me / Bio:
Vittorio Gassman was one of the most celebrated and versatile actors of Italian cinema and theatre. He was born in Genoa to a German father and an Italian Jewish mother. He studied at the National Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome and made his stage debut in 1943. He soon became a leading actor in classical and modern plays, working with renowned directors such as Luchino Visconti, Giorgio Strehler, and Luigi Squarzina. He also co-founded and co-directed the Teatro d'Arte Italiano, where he staged works by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Aeschylus, and others. Gassman's film career began in 1946 and spanned over five decades. He appeared in more than 100 films, ranging from comedies to dramas to historical epics. He worked with some of the most acclaimed filmmakers of his time, such as Federico Fellini, Mario Monicelli, Dino Risi, Ettore Scola, Francesco Rosi, and Sidney Lumet. He won several awards for his performances, including the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival for Scent of a Woman (1975), in which he played a blind army captain. He also directed and wrote several films, such as Kean: Genius or Scoundrel (1957), based on a play by Alexandre Dumas. Gassman was known for his charismatic and expressive voice, which he used to recite poetry, narrate documentaries, and dub foreign films. He was also a popular television personality, hosting shows and appearing in miniseries. He was nicknamed "Il Mattatore" (The Spotlight Chaser) for his ability to dominate the stage and the screen with his presence. Gassman was married three times and had four children, three of whom became actors. He died of a heart attack in Rome in 2000 at the age of 77. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Italian actors of all time and a master of his craft.
