About me / Bio:
Hermann von Helmholtz was one of the most influential scientists of the 19th century. He was born in Potsdam, Prussia, on August 31, 1821. His father was a teacher of philosophy and classics, and his mother was a descendant of William Penn. He showed an early interest in natural sciences and mathematics, and studied medicine at the Military Academy of Berlin. He graduated in 1842 and served as a military surgeon until 1847. During this time, he conducted research on animal heat, nerve physiology, and muscle contraction. He also formulated the law of conservation of energy, which states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but only transformed from one form to another. In 1848, he became a professor of physiology at the University of Königsberg, where he continued his research on sensory physiology and psychology. He invented the ophthalmoscope, a device for examining the retina of the eye, and developed the theory of color vision based on the trichromatic principle. He also studied acoustics and music theory, and wrote a famous book on the sensations of tone. He introduced the concept of resonance and devised several instruments for measuring sound waves. In 1855, he moved to the University of Bonn, where he taught anatomy and physiology. He also worked on electrodynamics and thermodynamics, and showed that electrical currents generate heat according to the same law as mechanical friction. He also proposed a mechanical theory of heat based on the kinetic energy of molecules. In 1858, he married Anna von Mohl, the daughter of a jurist and politician. They had three children: Richard, Ellen, and Robert. In 1871, he became a professor of physics at the University of Berlin, where he founded the first physics institute in Germany. He also became the president of the Physical Society of Berlin and a member of several scientific academies. He conducted research on optics, magnetism, electricity, meteorology, and hydrodynamics. He discovered the phenomenon of self-induction and explained the origin of atmospheric electricity. He also studied fluid dynamics and stability, and formulated the Helmholtz equation for describing potential flows. He also investigated the origin and evolution of life and the solar system. Helmholtz was not only a scientist but also a philosopher and a public intellectual. He wrote several essays on the philosophy of science, the relation between perception and reality, the aesthetics of art and nature, and the role of science in culture and education. He was a defender of empiricism and realism against idealism and metaphysics. He also advocated for academic freedom and scientific progress. Helmholtz died of heart failure in Berlin on September 8, 1894. He was buried at Friedhof Wannsee in Berlin. His legacy is honored by several institutions and awards named after him, such as the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, the Helmholtz Medal, and the Helmholtz Resonator.
