About me / Bio:
Neville Henry Cayley was a prominent Australian artist and ornithologist who was known for his paintings and illustrations of Australian birds. He was born in Portsmouth, England, on 10 August 1854, the son of Henry Cayley, a naval officer, and Elizabeth née Neville. He showed an early interest in natural history and art and received some formal training at the Portsmouth School of Art. He migrated to Australia in 1881 and settled in Sydney, where he worked as a draughtsman, lithographer and illustrator for various publications. He also joined the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (RAOU) and became an active member and contributor. Cayley's artistic talent and passion for birds led him to produce many paintings and illustrations of Australian avifauna. He exhibited his works at various venues, such as the Art Society of New South Wales, the Victorian Artists Society and the Royal Zoological Society. He also illustrated several books on Australian birds, such as A Synopsis of the Birds of Australia (1899) by Alfred John North and A Handlist of the Birds of Australia (1909) by Gregory Mathews. His most famous work was What Bird is That? (1931), a comprehensive guide to Australian birds that he wrote and illustrated. The book was published posthumously by his son Neville William Cayley, who followed his father's footsteps as an artist and ornithologist. Cayley was widely respected as an authority on Australian birds. He discovered several new species and subspecies, such as the white-winged fairywren (Malurus leucopterus edouardi), the yellow-tufted honeyeater (Lichenostomus melanops cassidix) and the white-browed scrubwren (Sericornis frontalis maculatus). He also collected many specimens for museums and private collections. He was a fellow of the Zoological Society of London and a corresponding member of the British Ornithologists' Union. Cayley died of tuberculosis on 22 December 1903 at his home in Bondi. He was buried at Waverley Cemetery. He was survived by his wife Alice Jane née Walker, whom he married in 1882, and their four children: Neville William, Winifred Alice, Dorothy Maud and Ethel May¹. He left behind a legacy of artistic excellence and scientific knowledge that continues to inspire generations of Australians.
