I think, therefore I am
About me / Bio:
René Descartes was a French philosopher and mathematician who is widely regarded as the founder of modern Western philosophy. He was born in La Haye en Touraine, France, on March 31, 1596. He studied at the Jesuit college of La Flèche, where he developed a keen interest in mathematics and natural philosophy. He later studied law at the University of Poitiers and joined the Dutch States Army as a volunteer. He traveled extensively in Europe and met many influential thinkers, such as Isaac Beeckman, Marin Mersenne, and Blaise Pascal. He also had a brief affair with a servant girl named Helène Jans, with whom he had a daughter named Francine in 1635. Descartes devoted most of his life to writing and publishing his philosophical and scientific works. He is best known for his method of doubt, which he used to question the validity of all previous knowledge and to establish a firm foundation for his own system of thought. He famously declared "I think, therefore I am" (cogito ergo sum) as the first principle of his philosophy. He also proposed a dualistic view of reality, in which mind and matter are distinct substances that interact through God's intervention. He argued that human beings have innate ideas of God, the self, and the basic principles of logic and mathematics. He also developed the Cartesian coordinate system, which enabled the application of algebra to geometry and the invention of analytic geometry. Descartes' works include Discourse on the Method (1637), Meditations on First Philosophy (1641), Principles of Philosophy (1644), and Passions of the Soul (1649). He also wrote several treatises on optics, mechanics, meteorology, and physiology. Descartes died of pneumonia in Stockholm, Sweden, on February 11, 1650. He was invited there by Queen Christina to tutor her in philosophy, but he found the climate and the court life unsuitable for his health and temperament. He was buried in Stockholm Cathedral, but his remains were later moved to Paris by his admirers. Descartes' influence on philosophy, mathematics, science, and culture is immense and lasting. He is considered one of the greatest rationalists and one of the key figures of the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment. He has been praised, criticized, and reinterpreted by many thinkers across different disciplines and epochs. His legacy is still relevant and inspiring for anyone who seeks to understand the nature of reality and the human condition.
