About me / Bio:
Arthur Boyd was a prominent Australian painter and art teacher who was known for his expressionistic and allegorical paintings of landscapes, still lifes and portraits. He was born in Murrumbeena, Victoria, on 24 July 1920, into a family of artists. His grandfather, Arthur Merric Boyd, was a landscape painter; his father, Merric Boyd, was a potter; his mother, Doris Boyd, was a painter and ceramicist; and his brothers and sisters were also involved in various artistic pursuits. He received no formal art education but learned from his family members and developed his own style. Boyd began exhibiting his paintings in the 1930s and became associated with the Angry Penguins group of modernist artists. He experimented with different media and techniques, such as oil painting, watercolor, pastel, printmaking and ceramics. He was influenced by European masters such as Rembrandt, Goya and Picasso, as well as by Australian artists such as Sidney Nolan and Albert Tucker. He also drew inspiration from his travels to Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as from his experiences during World War II, when he served as an official war artist. Boyd's paintings often explored themes such as human suffering, social injustice, love and spirituality. He used symbolism and mythology to convey his personal vision and commentary on the world. Some of his most famous works include the Bride series (1957-60), which depicted the interracial marriage of an Aboriginal man and a white woman; the Nebuchadnezzar series (1968-70), which portrayed the madness of the Babylonian king as a metaphor for the Vietnam War; and the Shoalhaven series (1971-94), which celebrated the natural beauty of the Shoalhaven River region in New South Wales. Boyd was widely acclaimed as one of Australia's greatest painters. He won several awards and honors, such as the Archibald Prize in 1949 for his portrait of Peter Porter; the CBE in 1970 for his services to art; and the Australian of the Year in 1995 for his contribution to Australian culture. He also donated over 3,000 artworks and his Bundanon property to the Australian people in 1993, creating the Bundanon Trust, which is now a center for arts education and research. Boyd died of a heart attack on 24 April 1999 at his home in Melbourne. He was buried at Bundanon alongside his wife Yvonne Lennie, whom he married in 1935 and who died just two months before him. They had five children: Jamie, Polly, Lucy, Guy and David¹. He left behind a legacy of artistic excellence and generosity that continues to inspire generations of Australians.
