About me / Bio:
Richard I was the third son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, and he inherited the throne of England after the death of his father and his elder brothers. He was also the Duke of Normandy, Aquitaine, Gascony, Poitiers, Anjou, Maine, and Nantes, and the Lord of Cyprus. He spent most of his life in France, where he ruled his vast domains. He was a renowned warrior and a leader of the Third Crusade, which aimed to recapture Jerusalem from the Muslim ruler Saladin. He fought several battles in the Holy Land, but he failed to achieve his ultimate goal. He also had a long rivalry with Philip II of France, who tried to take advantage of his absence and capture his lands. Richard was captured by Leopold V of Austria on his way back from the Crusade, and he was held for ransom by the Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI. He was released after paying a huge sum, which strained the finances of England. He returned to France to defend his territories from Philip II, but he was fatally wounded by a crossbow bolt while besieging the castle of Châlus in 1199. He died at the age of 41 and was buried at Fontevraud Abbey. He was succeeded by his younger brother John, who faced a rebellion by his French vassals and lost most of his continental possessions. Richard is remembered as one of the most popular and heroic kings of England, and he is the subject of many legends and stories. He is also known as Richard the Lionheart or Richard Cœur de Lion, because of his courage and prowess in battle123
